DAY 1
Have been introduced to PHOTOSYNTH software, and the process of turning images into 3D objects.
Demonstration showed a bagel sandwich being turned into a 3D "watertight" object - ready for 3D printing.
Homework for tonight is to read the how to photo guide and experiment with few objects, lighting conditions etc to see which produces best results.
DAY 1 - HOMEWORK
Read the Photosynth photo guide to figure best processes to achieve good results.
Following are the experiments with some description of processes.
EXPERIMENT 1
Old money box, using a turning base to rotate the object, camera on a tripod, fixed light source.
total of 187 images used - result 67 % Synthy. possible problems - the constant light source, no texture in ground for registration....
EXPERIMENT 2
Old coffee grinder, using a turning base to rotate the object, camera on a tripod, fixed light source.
total of 68 images used - result 71 % Synthy. possible problems - the constant light source, no texture in ground for registration.... positives - less reflective surface....
EXPERIMENT 3
A watering can, plastic, rotating around the object. 28 images used - 23% Synth - possible problems - shinny surface of the object, a uniform base - white card and perhaps light sourse giving uneven light
EXPERIMENT 4
Running shoes, rotating around the object. 20 images used - 19% Synth - possible problems - not enough light, even surface.....
EXPERIMENT 5
First of the outdoor experiments. 14 images - 63 % Synthy - possible problems - reflection of surface - shot in sunlight
EXPERIMENT 6
8 pictures, overcast - 100% Synthy :). good texture in sandstone, even lighting.
EXPERIMENT 7
34 pictures - 97 % Synth - good start - even indoor light
SPENT YEARS WAITING FOR THINGS TO UPLOAD ....... and gave up ....
BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD - TAKE 2 ON THE EXP 6 AND 7 .....
Same chair - plur registration points on surfaces and on the ground. 100 % Synthy :)
67 images used - exported point cloud from Photosynth into Meshlab .....
with all noise
cleaned up .....
COMPUTER CRASHED WHILST EXPORTING THE SECOND (FACADE) POINT CLOUD. IMPORTANT - DO NOT SAVE YOUR WORK ON THE COMPUTER DESKTOP - AS ANY DATA WILL BE VIPED DURING RE-START. THE ABOVE .ply FILE WAS LOST WILL ALL ASSOCIATED DATA. SPEWING - LESSON LEARNED THE HARD WAY .....
FACADE EXPERIMENT - TAKE MILLION AND ONE .....
back to the Old Main Building sculpture by Tom Bass. Possible exploration of the Assignment one brief ...... Look for examples of facade art, chair art, car art - possible new Photosynth to do of a model car.
100% Synth using 129 photos :))
ASSIGNMENT ONE - IDEAS AND INSPIRATIONS
Chair Art
